The aims of blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty beautifies and rejuvenates your look. It is a frequent, minimally invasive surgery, which immediately provides a fresher and more open look.

The procedure consists of removing excess skin and fatty tissue, correcting sagging eyelids, erasing wrinkles and crow’s feet, removing bags and dark circles. All signs of aging around the eyes are reduced. The procedure can treat the upper or lower eyelids separately, or both at the same time.

This intervention can be combined with a temporal lift to raise the eyebrows, or with a cervico-facial lift for an overall rejuvenation of the face.

The aesthetic objective will be to avoid altering the shape of the eyes or the unique expression of the eyes, and to preserve their identity by correcting only the effects of age.

Who is blepharoplasty for?

Blepharoplasty is commonly performed in midlife for both women and men . However, it is sometimes carried out earlier, when the disgraces are of hereditary origin rather than related to age.

Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids will remove the skin excess that gives the impression of drooping eyelids. Blepharoplasty of the lower eyelids is indicated when the eyelids are droopy and withered, with small horizontal wrinkles resulting from skin distension. The other indication is to remove fatty hernias that form unwanted bags under the eyes.

Your surgeon may combine other procedures in the event of associated imperfections in the gaze. It is sometimes advised to consider a lipostructure (lipofilling) of the eyelids and the middle third of the face to harmonize the different parts of the face.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can involve risks and complications. A first consultation with your surgeon is essential to know if this intervention is adapted to your particular situation.

Before and after pictures

The blepharoplasty procedure

Blepharoplasty will positively transform the harmony of your face. The results are final .

Follow your surgeon’s recommendations to optimize the healing process and the quality of the result.

Before the intervention

The first consultation is essential to understand your request and your motivations. Your surgeon will take the necessary time to carefully analyse your facial anatomy to ensure that the procedure will beautify your face and provide real rejuvenation. The specialist will carry out a complete examination of the face, eyelids and eyes to offer you the solution best suited to your wishes.

It is sometimes necessary to consult an ophthalmologist first, to make sure there is no underlying pathology.

Anesthesia

Blepharoplasty is generally performed as an ambulatory procedure under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation.

However, in rare cases, a general anaesthetic will be offered. The choice of the technique will be made between you, your anesthesiologist and your surgeon.

A consultation with your anesthesiologist will take place a few days before your procedure.

The day of the procedure

For the upper eyelids, the incisions are hidden in the fold located halfway up the eyelid, between the mobile and the fixed part of the eyelid.

After removal of the fat and resection of the skin, the scar is imperceptible. At the level of the lower eyelids, the incision is infraciliary, and will therefore remain invisible after the healing process.

If there is no skin excess, the fat pockets will be removed internally (transconjunctivaly). At this stage, a number of technical refinements can be made, to suit each case and the surgeon’s habits (canthopexies or fixation of the external angle of the eye, to treat laxity of the lower eyelid, or lipostructure to treat dark circles).

The sutures are made with very fine and non-absorbable threads. The procedure lasts between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the number of eyelids to be operated on and the other cosmetic procedures involved.

After the procedure

Blepharoplasty is a common intervention whose consequences are not very painful but rather uncomfortable the first days.

The ablation of the threads is carried out 5 to 7 days after the intervention. Make-up then becomes possible. The bruises disappear within a week to 10 days. Socio-professional eviction is advised for about eight to ten days.

The eyes may be sensitive to light and present with tearing or, on the contrary, a certain dryness. Thus, eye drops are always prescribed after the intervention. Wwearing contact lenses is impossible for a few days.

Wearing tinted glasses is recommended to protect you from wind and sun. Manual lymphatic drainage during the first few days, followed by Endermologie drainage, is highly recommended to accelerate the resorption of the oedema and optimise the healing process.

Results

A period of one to six months is necessary to appreciate the end result. This is the time necessary for the scars to fade and the tissues to regain all their flexibility.

The intervention made it possible to correct sagging skin and remove fatty hernias, thus correcting the aged and tired appearance of the eyes.

This operation will make you look up to ten years younger.

The degree of satisfaction of patients undergoing blepharoplasty is very high. Indeed, the results of a blepharoplasty are generally among the most durable of cosmetic surgery.

The removal of the fat pockets is permanent. They almost never reappear. On the other hand, the skin continues to age and the resulting laxity can, over time, lead to eyelid creasing.

However, it is unlikely that a new intervention will be considered for the next decade. The goal of this surgery is to provide an improvement, not to achieve perfection. If your expectations remain realistic, the obtained result should give you utmost satisfaction.

Explanations

The art of blepharoplasty at Laclinic

At Laclinic, the artistic skills of the surgeons are essential for each intervention. For blepharoplasty, the challenge will be to beautify the look while maintaining the unique expression and personality of the eyes.

To achieve this goal, your surgeon will take into account several criteria such as the quality and texture of the skin, the shape of the eyes, a possible asymmetry and the space between the eyes, the shape of the eyebrows, the space between eyelids and eyelashes, etc.

Associated treatments

Blepharoplasty does not eliminate wrinkles from the corner of the eye nor improve a sagging forehead, drooping eyebrows or suborbital hollows.

Depending on your specific needs, the intervention can be combined with a lipostructure of the dark circles, a frontotemporal facelift, a centrofacial facelift and a cervicofacial facelift.

Eye rejuvenation without surgery

Before the age of 40, blepharoplasty is usually unnecessary unless genetic factors have accelerated the formation of puffiness or drooping eyelids.

Hyaluronic acid injections, resorbable tensor threads and botulinum toxin are non-invasive alternatives that are effective to lift the eyebrows, open up the look and reduce dark circles and crow’s feet.
