Objectives of brachioplasty

Brachioplasty, or arm lift, is the intervention that treats both the sagging skin of the arms and their excess volume .

After weight loss or simply with the passage of time, the skin and subcutaneous tissue on the inside of the arms may sag.

This procedure generally combines a liposuction of the excess fat with a resection of the drooping skin and armpits. The remaining skin is lifted and tightened.

The brachioplasty will not only refine the arms but also make it possible to sculpt their muscular shape. It will remove the physical and psychological discomfort related to the hanging skin.

Who is brachioplasty for?

Brachioplasty, or arm lift, is aimed for patients who wish to improve the appearance of their arms.

Patients who encounter discomfort with clothing, especially in summer wearing short-sleeved clothing .

A hanging skin might also be uncomfortable when practicing certain types of sport activities.

Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that can involve risks and complications. A first consultation with your surgeon is essential to know if this intervention is adapted to your particular situation.

The brachioplasty procedure

A brachioplasty will positively transform your figure. The results are final .

Follow your surgeon’s recommendations to optimize the healing process and the quality of the result.

Before the intervention

The first consultation is essential to understand your request and your motivations. A preliminary clinical examination and a precise questioning will allow our specialist to define the most appropriate type of surgery for your case.

Your surgeon will take the time to accurately analyze the quality of the skin to assess wether liposuction of the arms is also necessary.

Your surgeon will also make sure that your weight has remained stable for several months. The type of scar and its positioning will be discused with you. The incision can be either vertical, running on the inside of the arm, or horizontal, hidden in the folds of the armpit.

The two types of incisions can be combined. A preoperative check-up will be carried out in accordance with the prescriptions.

Anesthesia

In some cases, brachioplasty is performed on an outpatient basis or with overnight hospitalization under general anesthesia , but most of the time alocal anesthesia under sedation may be sufficient. The choice of technique will be made between you, your anesthesiologist and your surgeon.

A consultation with your anesthesiologist will take place a few days before your procedure.

The day of the procedure

Your surgeon will adapt his operating strategy according to your particular case in order to obtain the best possible result.

In the presence of excess fat, the procedure begins with a liposuction. The excess skin is then removed, leaving a scar whose location and length depend on the degree of skin distension.

The remaining skin is then lifted to reshape the arm in an harmonious way. This procedure is performed according to the operating plan defined with the patient during the consultation.

The sutures are absorbable and in principle no drainage is put in place. A dry dressing is applied to the scars. No compression garment is necessary.

The duration of the intervention is on average an hour and a half. It varies according to the extent of the improvements to be made.

After the procedure

The pain remains generally very bearable with appropriate medication. In the post-operative period, ecchymoses (bruises) and edema (swelling) may appear. They will regress within 10 to 20 days following the intervention.

The healing period can be a little unpleasant due to the tension exerted on the edges of the suture.

The extend of the social downtime depends on your type of professional activity. Sedentary work can often be resumed after a few days.

The practice of a sports activity can be resumed gradually from the 4th postoperative week. The scar should be protected from the sun and UV rays for the first three months.

Manual lymphatic drainage from the first days, followed by drainage by Endermologie® will accelerate the resorption of edema and optimize healing.

Results

The result can be appreciated after 3 weeks , afterresorption of the edema . It will take approximately 3 to 6 months for the skin to adapt completely on the new shape of the body.

The final result can be assessed after 6 months.

Brachioplasty thus offers a satisfactory and definitive correction of excess fat. The goal of this surgery is to bring an improvement and not to achieve perfection. If your wishes are realistic, the result should give you great satisfaction.

Associated treatments

Brachioplasty can generally be combined with liposuction of the arms as explained above.

The thigh lift

In presence of a slackening of the skin at the level of the inner thighs, an isolated liposuction may not be sufficient. In such a situation, only a re-tensioning of this skin is likely to correct this defect: this intervention is called cruroplasty or a lifting of the inner thigh.
